Yes, essential oils are safe for babies! I am going to give you the 411 on when to use oils, where to apply oils, and which oils you absolutely NEED if you have a baby.
(If you are 100% new to essential oils, I would recommend reading my post Essential Oils 101 before diving into this one.)
Quick back story, I have been using oils for about four years now. However, it wasn't until I became pregnant with my son that I decided to really dive in and learn about how these little bottles can help support our bodies. Oils are known for supporting our physical, mental, and emotional health and it is no different for little kids.
When/Why would my baby need oils?
Truly the list could go on forever, but I tried to narrow down the primary reasons you would need/want to reach for essential oils for your baby. I use oils on my son every single day. The first reason for this is immune support. Nothing is worse than having a sick baby, and truly with little ones it is all about preventative care. The second reason is either emotional support or he is experiencing something I mentioned above. Being one is incredibly hard, ya know?
Where would I apply the oils?
There are 4 main areas to apply oils:
Bottom of their feet
Down their spine
On their belly
Along their jaw line/ears
How do I know which oils to use?
One of the reasons I chose doTERRA was because of the simplicity. They have a kit called the Touch Kit, which consists of 9 of the top oils already pre-diluted and ready for a baby's sensitive skin. They take all the guess work out of it, so you can reach for the bottle without having to worry about making your own or if you have the right dilution ratio. Dilution is commonly used to help spread an oil over a larger surface area or as a way to protect the skin from a possible sensitivity. When my son was 0-4 months, I would dilute the touch kit a little more by rubbing fractionated coconut oil on his skin before I applied the oil. He had very sensitive skin, so I wanted to make sure we avoided any and all possible irritations. If you are concerned about sensitivities or the potency of the oil, always dilute! There are always options!
Oils Included in the Touch Kit:
Lavender - widely used for its relaxing qualities, promote a restful night’s sleep
Peppermint - body temperature regulation, promotes digestive health
Frankincense - cellular support, supports healthy nervous system
Melaleuca - promotes healthy skin/nails/hair, supports healthy respiratory function
Digestzen - promotes healthy digestion and easy stomach discomfort
Breathe - supports clear airways, helps minimize the effects of seasonal threats
On Guard- immune support, supports the body’s natural antioxidant defenses
Oregano - immune support, supports healthy liver & respiratory function
Deep Blue - relieves muscle tension
Although it is most affordable to purchase multiple oils through a kit, it is not the only option when getting started. You can also purchase these oils individually and if you decide to go that route, I have listed my top 3 for babies below:
Here is a dilution cheat sheet. This is an excellent guide if you are creating your own blends for your little ones.
Why Would I Need To Make My Own Blends?
There are two reasons you would need to make your own blends. First is because you do not have the touch kit, but have the full, pure 15ML or 5ML essential oil bottle. The second reason is because you are wanting to make a blend for a specific purpose such as: teething, stomach aches, extra immune support, etc.
What Other Oil Resources Do You Recommend?
There are tons of resources when it comes to using oils. My favorite book, which I consider my oil bible, is the Essential Life. This book is my go to and something that I reference daily. Excellent resource for both newbies and oil experts.
I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will be covering oils I used during labor/delivery and postpartum soon!
